The sun angle problem

Vitamin D synthesis in skin requires UVB radiation at a specific wavelength. At latitudes above roughly 35–37°N — which covers essentially all of Canada — the sun sits too low in the sky from October through March for the atmosphere to let enough UVB through, no matter how much time is spent outdoors.

This is a geography problem, not a lifestyle problem. Sunscreen use, time outdoors and skin tone all affect summer vitamin D synthesis, but none of them fix the winter shortfall — the UVB simply is not there to synthesise from.

What Canadian data shows

National nutrition surveys have repeatedly found a substantial share of Canadian adults below recommended blood vitamin D levels by late winter, even among people who consider themselves generally healthy and active. Osteoporosis Canada and Health Canada both discuss supplementation for adults specifically because of this seasonal pattern.
